APD often occurs in conjunction with other areas of difficulty:

  • Language Disorder
  • Phonological Awareness Problem
  • Reading Disorder
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The estimate of Chermak and Musiek (1998) of 3-5% incidence of APD is widely accepted, though some authors estimate a higher incidence.  This is greater than the incidence of deafness requiring hearing aids in children.

Auditory Processing Disorder

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a hearing problem in which the ears process sound normally but the brain sometimes has difficulty interpreting what is heard.

This can adversely affect understanding, especially in difficult listening conditions such as in a noisy classroom, or when listening to complex information or intstructions. As a result, learning can also be affected.

SoundSkills is a specialist multi-disciplinary diagnostic and treatment service for children and adults with Auditory Processing Disorder (APD), minimal hearing loss, or unilateral hearing loss.
