Training the Brain - Neuroplasticity and Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

The human brain has a remarkable ability to learn new skills including auditory processing skills. This ability is called neuroplasticity.

Thanks to neuroplasticity, auditory processing disorder (APD) is very treatable. At SoundSkills we refer to it as "teaching the brain to hear". Auditory skills training underlies all of our APD treatments whether in the form of one-on-one therapy, software training games, or fitting of remote microphone hearing aids (sometimes called FM systems).

In addition to the many direct benefits, treatment with remote microphone hearing aids causes improvement in many aspects of auditory processing, for example hearing in noise, phonological awareness, auditory memory, and the electrical responses to sounds in the brain, so that remote microphone hearing aids often don't need to be used long-term.
